Hunger Statistics

The Food and Agriculture Association (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) reports that 852 million people were hungry around
the globe in 2004.

CHILDREN WORLDWIDE ARE OVERWHELMINGLY THE VICTIMS OF HUNGER'S WRATH:
The UN estimates that 11 million children under the age of 5
die every year in developing countries, with more than half
from hunger-related causes. Also, more than 20 million low-birth weight babies are born around the world each year.
These babies risk dying in infancy while those who survive
often suffer lifelong cognitive and/or physical disabilities.

NO MONEY, NO FOOD: Over 1.2 billion people in the developing world
live on less than $1 a day according to the UN Development Programme.
The developing world, consisting of 125 low and middle income countries, comprises
about 78% of the world's total population (see map at bottom).

HOW MANY PEOPLE IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD ARE AFFECTED
BY HUNGER AND MALNOURISHMENT???
The UN World Food Programme reports this:
-221.1 million people in India
- 203.5 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa
-142 million people in China
-519 million people in Asia and the Pacific
-52.9 million people in Latin America and the Caribbean
-33.1 million people in the Near East

MOTHER NATURE IN SHAMBLES:
Overfarming has already destroyed over 15% of the earth's
fertile farmland according to the UN World Food Programme.
